Actinic keratosis (also called solar keratosis) is a scaly lesion that develops on skin exposed to sunlight over long periods. ### What Does It Look Like?

Flaking caused by simple dryness usually improves with moisturizing and does not recur repeatedly in the same spot. Actinic keratosis, by contrast, tends to recur in the same sun-exposed areas, does not resolve with moisturizer, and often becomes progressively rougher. However, it can be difficult to distinguish visually in many cases, and some lesions require differentiation from early squamous cell carcinoma or other keratotic conditions. If a new scaly lesion persists for more than a month, professional evaluation — and a biopsy if needed — is recommended rather than self-diagnosis.

### What Happens If It's Left Untreated?

Not every lesion diagnosed as actinic keratosis progresses to cancer, and outcomes vary by individual. Still, some lesions have been reported to progress to squamous cell carcinoma over time, so prompt evaluation is important if a lesion grows larger, suddenly thickens, or is accompanied by ulceration, bleeding, or pain. Even when the likelihood of progression is low, early identification and management are generally recommended for long-term skin health.

### What Can Be Done for Prevention and Management?

The most fundamental preventive measure is reducing UV exposure. Reapplying sunscreen generously, limiting outdoor activity during peak UV hours, and using physical protection such as hats and long sleeves can all help. For existing lesions, clinical approaches such as cryotherapy, topical agents, and photodynamic therapy are used, but the appropriate method depends on the individual lesion's characteristics and skin condition, so it should always be determined through consultation with a dermatologist. Regular skin checks to catch new lesions or changes in existing ones early are also an important part of management.
